Basics

Proofreading

All articles will be subject to proofreading and editing before publication, but you should still proofread your own work. At minimum, always run your articles through a spell check before submission.

Accuracy

Please check all facts in your articles. This can seem like a waste of time when it's a subject you know well, but mistakes happen to everyone. Think about how you feel when you read an article that gets basic facts wrong. In particular, check the spelling of unusual names.

Libel

You are responsible for any libellous statements made in anything you write. Carefully consider whether your opinions could be libellous, and do not repeat rumours as fact. Here is a basic guide to what constitutes libel in the UK

File Formats

We edit articles using OpenOffice.org. We can accept files in either OpenOffice .odt or Microsoft Word .doc formats. Other file formats, such as .docx or .rtf, often cause problems, so please do not submit articles using these.

Images

You may wish to include images in your article. These should be submitted as separate files, not included in the article document. Pictures should be no larger than 250 by 400 pixels.

Images will always be inserted to the left and right of articles. Images will not be given captions. We will try to put images where you think they fit best with the text, but because of lay-out restrictions, this may not always be possible.

Gillian Coyle

Gillian is GeekPlanetOnline's proofreader, Sub-Editor and all-round magic pixie. Her biggest claim to fame, however, is that in 1984 she was the proud recipient of the last packet of Spangles ever produced by the Mars company, thanks to a competition run in The Beano.
