Appearance

Font

All articles should be submitted using size 12 Arial font.

Titles should be size 16 Arial font, bolded and centred. Do not underline titles or use CAPITALS.

Subtitles should be size 12 Arial font, bolded and justified. Do not underline subtitles or use CAPITALS.

Paragraphs

Paragraphs should be justified, separated and not indented. Use regular line spacing and only one space at the beginning of a new sentence.

Use the Enter key to create new paragraphs. Do not use Shift plus Enter to start a new line, as this causes problems with justified text. If in doubt, click the pilcrow (¶) button on your toolbar, and check that every paragraph ends in a pilcrow.

Use of Bold and Italics

Titles of films, TV shows, books and albums. should be highlighted in bold. Titles of individual episodes or songs should be highlighted in italics.

Direct quotes should be within double quotation marks (“ “) and highlighted in italics.

Proper names should remain in standard type.

Use of bold, italics and CAPITALS for emphasis should be rare. Use your words to emphasise; over-formatting is unattractive and makes reading more difficult.

Please do not use bold italics or underlining at all.

Lists

We prefer you to use in-text lists rather than bullet-point lists. For example:

Joss Whedon produced the television shows Buffy, Angel, Firefly and Dollhouse.

Rather than:

Joss Whedon produced the following television shows:

  • Buffy
  • Angel
  • Firefly
  • Dollhouse

Also limit the number of examples you give in a list. For instance, there may be many X-men titles currently on sale, but you don't need to list them all. Normally, three or four examples are enough.

Gillian Coyle

Gillian is GeekPlanetOnline's proofreader, Sub-Editor and all-round magic pixie. Her biggest claim to fame, however, is that in 1984 she was the proud recipient of the last packet of Spangles ever produced by the Mars company, thanks to a competition run in The Beano.
